CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATIONS
Indian Revenue Service (IRS - Group A) officers are recruited through
the Indian Civil Services Examinations (ICS) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission
(UPSC).
It is a 3 tier Graduate level examination conducted by the Union Public Service
Commission (UPSC) every year.
1. The Civil Services Examination consists of a Preliminary Examination which
is an eliminatory and objective type multiple choice test with two compulsory papers. Those
who qualify in this Preliminary screening test can appear for the Main
Examination. Marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination is not counted for
final selection and ranking of a candidate.
2. The Main Examination is a descriptive type of test having compulsory and
elective subjects. It includes Essay, General Studies, English Language, one
Indian Language and two elective subjects. Those who get the minimum qualifying
marks in the Main Examination are called for an Interview/Personality test.
English language and Indian language under compulsory category are qualifying
type and the marks scored in these papers are not included for final ranking.
3. The Interview/Personality test is normally conducted at New Delhi. Marks
obtained in the Main Examination and Interview together decides the final
selection and rank of a candidate. Allotment to the cadre depends on the rank
and option of a candidate. Advertisements containing the details and the dates
of examinations are normally published in the Employment News and other local
News Papers.
